Country: Canada

What are you reviewing?: Dive Site

Name(s): HMCS Columbia

Rating: 4+ Stars (Great!)

Visibility - How many feet?: 35-40 feet

Details (please explain why):

Beautifully situated artificial reef - purpose sunk destroyer escort located in a tranquil bay near other popular Campbell River dive
sites such as Seymour Narrows, Steep Island, the walls of Quadra Island, Copper Cliffs, Row and Be Damned and the Argonaut Wharf where Giant Pacific Octopus can typically be found.

We dove the wreck twice and both times were extremely calm, relaxing and full of color and life.

While there isn't as much life as on other wrecks due to the angle of the shipwreck and the lack of current in the bay, there was still plenty to see.

As we descended down to around 60 feet where the towers and deck started, the sun was shining through, making the large white plumose anemones look almost transparent and the numerous large northern feather duster tube worms resemble southern palm trees.

Floating down while looking back up towards the surface, the towers and chains that were covered in marine life made for a fantastic site.

As we slowly cruised along one side of the wreck and back the other, I had a free-swimming shrimp land on my glove (with a little help) who came along for the ride, and saw numerous large ling cod, various types of starfish and anemones, white and orange plumose anemones, several types of nudibranch, the
feather duster tube worms, different types of fish and shrimp and more, but didn't find the giant pacific octopus that is said to hang out in one of the cubby holes on the deck.

I am not certified to go in the wreck, so even though it has been carefully prepared by the ARSBC, I swam along the exterior while my dive buddy checked out the inside.

There was even a 'Lest We Forget' Remembrance Day flag that someone had attached to the ship which had got a little bunched up so we proudly ensured the flag was properly displayed.

All in all two very enjoyable dives, timed to be right at slack by the dive charter operator and my divemaster, Matt Arnold of GreenSea Diving.

Cooldives came across this article in the Vancouver Sun today talking about marine life in the Salish Sea.

With scuba diving in the Salish Sea, also known as the Emerald Sea, already being recognized as some of the best in the world in terms of marine life and overall dive destination value, imagine how much better it will be in time once previously over-fished marine life recovers.

We are happy to see that conservation efforts are working and seeing all the life under water is an amazing experience.

Apr 11, What is Divecaching in British Columbia

What is divecaching British Columbia you ask?

It is an exciting new addition to the leisure activity known as geocaching, which is a fun, fast growing, family-friendly form of treasure hunting.

Geocachers use GPS devices, maps, compasses, secret clues and curiosity to seek out special little hidden treasure caches around the world.

Chances are you passed numerous geocaches today without even knowing it. There are already over 5 million geocaches which can be found in over a hundred countries world-wide, on each of our 7 wonderful continents, and there are over one and a half million people (geocachers) already registered and actively searching.

Divecaching British Columbia is therefore the combining of Geocaching with the amazing world-class scuba diving (and perhaps snorkeling) that is found in the cool, emerald green waters of British Columbia.

Jacques Cousteau declared that the temperate, emerald colored Pacific Ocean near British Columbia, with its' clear water, colorful marine life and beautiful, safe and protected coastlines provides for some of the best cool water diving in the world and the best in North America.

British Columbia is becoming famous for being the best dive destination value in North America, best dive destination in the world, best wall diving in the world, healthiest marine environment, best macro environment, and many other scuba awards.

So now, you can experience our fantastic British Columbia diving while looking for underwater geocaches.

Try new dive sites, practice and improve your dive and navigation skills, and create a world-wide legacy of where you have been.

Apr 9, Vancouver Island Diving Vacation - Day 2 on the HMCS Columbia near Campbell River

Day 2 of the custom dive holiday was going to include a 2 tank dive on the former HMCS Columbia, located about 20 minutes north of Campbell River.

After a nice drive from Courtenay to our Campbell River diving location with the dive boat in tow, we arrived in Campbell River and quickly had the boat in the water.

The Columbia was commissioned Nov. 7 1959, built by Burrard Shipyards, and was intentionally scuttled on June 22,1996 by the Artificial Reef Society of BC as their 4th artificial reef.

She is 111 meters (366 feet) long, and was a Restigouche-class Destroyer Escort.

Water temperature was around 45 degrees and viz was around 35-40 feet for the first dive with virtually no current. And with the sun shining through the water, the numerous plumose anemone looked almost translucent – beautiful!

While we didn’t see the young octopus that is said to inhabit one of the cubby holes on the deck, we saw numerous ling cod, canary rockfish, sculpins, lingcod, shrimp, swimming scallops, loads of starfish, shrimp, some nudibranch and anemone, brittle stars, some urchin, and more.

I even had a small shrimp land on my glove and come along for a ride for about 30 feet of swimming before he had enough and dove off into the deep.

While the real guns were removed, pipes were installed in their place and with all the encrusting life, they looked surreal underwater pointed up towards the surface.

It was a beautiful, relaxing dive and we went down one side and returned on the other. Matt ventured into a few of the carefully prepared openings while I played it safe and followed his bubbles along the hull from the outside

Mar 20, Race to the Finish Line - Annapolis Volunteers Needed to Help Get her Sunk

On Sunday, March 18, 2012, Cooldives joined Howie Robbins and Larry Reeves from the ARSBC and 6 other volunteers (some first time, some repeat) out working on the Annapolis.

It has been a few months since we volunteered last and submitted an Annapolis sinking update, and were impressed with the advancements made during that time. Great work everybody!

Per Howie, the project is 95% of the way there.

There are a number of reasons for the delays, including the current location of the ship which makes getting to it a bit of a challenge, and the desire to ensure the ship is 100% compliant with environmental and safety policies and to ensure this becomes one of the world's absolute best artificial reefs.

To accomplish this, however, they need more volunteers!

Whether it is for just one day, or whether you choose to return to partake in the adventure and teamwork for multiple days, please consider helping out.

While the Artificial Reef Society of BC does have prizes to be raffled off to volunteers at the end of the job, it is also extremely satisfying just knowing we were part of Vancouver's history.

So please, if you are reading this, volunteer at least one day to be a part of this monumental sinking.

Contact Cooldives or the ARSBC for more details.

Work is still progressing on preparing the Annapolis for sinking with the help of many volunteers.

The staff of Cooldives are going to help this weekend - any other takers out there?

When the Annapolis sinks, hopefully very soon, she will provide life to many species of marine life and will bring local divers and others from around the world to experience this magnificant new artificial reef.

Help the dedicated staff of the ARSBC and volunteer some time now.

The more hands on deck, the quicker life can begin on her new home under the Emerald Sea.

Feb 28, What Does SCUBA Stand For?

What Does SCUBA Stand For?

This question is asked by people from all over the world all the time!

The word "scuba" is actually an acronym involving the letters S-C-U-B-A.

So-Can-U-Breathe-Air?

Well, sort of.

It really stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus simply because scuba diving involves using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (an air tank and 2 stage regulator system) to allow you to breathe air underwater.

While it may not sound exciting – where you can go and what you can see using necessary scuba equipment is extremely exciting!

You can see incredibly diverse and colorful marine life, dramatic rock formations, beautiful seascapes, and maybe even discover a mysterious sunken shipwreck or treasure.

You are in a whole new world where you are virtually weight-less, flying through the peaceful silence of a secret, mysterious realm.

And the undersea world is amazing!

Curious sea-life watches you carefully, and will sometimes come to visit and play.

Some may consider scuba diving to be an ‘extreme sport’. But, if done properly, it can be a safe, recreational activity that can provide fun, excitement, exercise, friendships and memories that will last a life-time.

You can generally start scuba diving when you are 12 years old and can dive well into your retirement years.

Once properly trained and equipped, you can plunge under the surface of this virtually unexplored, fascinating, under water world.

And given the additional equipment and training required to dive in British Columbia, earning your dive license in BC is one of the best places possible to learn how to dive.

Contact CoolDives.com for more information on learning to SCUBA dive today.

Jan 27, BC Dive Site Review- - Wall at Heron Rocks

Dive Site Review Near Hornby Island

Name: Matt Arnold of GreenSea Diving

City: Comox

State/Prov: BC

Country: Canada

What are you reviewing?: Boat Dive Site in the Hornby Island area

Name(s): Wall at Heron Rocks

Rating: 5 Stars (Fantastic!!)

Visibility - How many feet?: 50-75 (January)

Details (please explain why): Beautiful wall at the southern end of Hornby Island .

Wall Starts at about 50fsw and continues down all the way to 150fsw with a few ledges along the way.

You'll see Wolf eels and Octopus if you're lucky as well as the usual suspects like large Ling Cod, white Plumous Anemones, Rock Scallops, lots of rock fish, anemones, various star fish, giant red urchins, and loads of other color and marine life.

It's a shear vertical wall with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and with good viz its a stunningly beautiful dive.

On the surface you might even find sealions sunbathing on the exposed rock.

Nice that it's only 5 minutes from a small marina and safety from the weather if it comes up too.

Best wall I have ever dove in BC!

Kelp and Critters is an inspirational, fund raising dvd put together by some well known Pacific Northwest marine stewards, Peter Mieras and Kathy Johnson.

This collection of often unique footage represents 3 years of underwater filming, tide-pool watching and above water footage.

With memorable images of wild orcas, breaching humpbacks, mysterious six gill sharks, colorful corals, sponges and other invertebrate life, proceeds from the sale of this souvenir diving in British Columbia dvd will be put towards worthwhile local environmental and marine causes.

The dvd is only $20 plus HST and is compatible with dvd players world-wide.
